A cheifly British celebration, Valentine's Day began being acknowledged in North America in the 19th century, initially made popular by British settlers. It has since spread around the globe, to places such as Japan and Korea. In Chinese Culture, there is a similar counterpart to Valentine's Day. It is called "The Night of Sevens" and falls on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar.
In Brazil, there is no Valentine's Day. Instead they celebrate "Dia dos Namorados" which literally translates as "Day of the Enamored" or, even more literally, "Boyfriend's Day" or "Girlfriend's Day".
In Brazil, there is no Valentine's Day. Instead they celebrate "Dia dos Namorados" which literally translates as "Day of the Enamored" or, even more literally, "Boyfriend's Day" or "Girlfriend's Day". This is celebrated on June 12th, when couples exchange gifts such as lingerie, chocolates, cards and - most popularly by a substantial margin - bouquets of flowers, often roses.
Elsewhere in the world, "Valentine's Day" or it's regional counterpart is celebrated on February 14th as it is in Europe and the US. In Mexico for example, "Día del amor y la amistad" - or "Love and Friendship Day" - is celebrated on February 14th. The same occasion is celebrated in Columbia but falls on the third Friday and Saturday of each September.
In Slovenia, the day of love is traditionally celebrated on the 12th of March. In Romania, the traditional holiday for lovers is Dragobete, which is celebrated on February 24th. Language aside however, wherever you are in the world, "I love you" means the same. Here's how it goes across the globe:
