Delhi 'to import flowers for Commonwealth Games'
Delhi is preparing to host the Commonwealth Games this October, with flowers featuring in the preparation of the venues.
However, officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD's) Horticulture Department have expressed concern that the planting will not be completed in time and that some of the flowers may not survive due to the weather conditions in October.
Construction work on the venues is hampering efforts to plant the blooms, which means that the organisation must wait until the end of August.
Due to the weather, the MCD revealed that it will use native plants in many areas, such as hibiscus and bougainvillea because they "are fit enough to survive the harsh weather conditions of Delhi".
In addition, hundreds of thousands of potted plants will be brought in from Naintal shortly before the games and placed around the venues.
These will include chrysanthemums, pansies and petunias, which should be in full bloom when the sporting contest begins.
All the action will begin on October 3rd, with events taking place until October 14th.
